Don't think racism is real? Watch this.

Courtesy of Vox:

If systemic racism isn't real, why are black people nearly four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana use than their white counterparts despite using drugs at similar rates, about twice as likely to be pulled over while driving, or half as likely to get a call back after they mail their resume to an employer?

The video above, by Brave New Films, breaks down these stats and more in a takedown of the idea that systemic racism isn't a real problem in America.

In my opinion if you are still denying racism exists  after what happened to Eric Garner and Freddie Gray then you are a bigot through and through and NOTHING will ever change your mind.

I think so many people live in a bubble. I have heard people criticize and demean the black community, yet they have never even stepped into a poor community or had any interaction with black people. It's pathetic. Many kids grow up feeling very entitled and have no idea how lucky they are.

Off topic, but Gryphen, did you see these videos about Samantha Bee ? They are all hysterical, but the Palin ones really made me laugh.

Anyone who denies it exists isn't in touch with reality. But let us not forget that it exists on all sides of the color spectrum.

Former Marine to CNN: When I Fought for U.S., I Was ‘Patriot,’ but When I Fight for My People I’m ‘Thug’

...“We gave our lives for this country,” the man, who identified himself as a former Marine, said to a line of riot police. “Is this what it’s coming to, man? I love this fucking country, too. Just as much as you do. We’re fighting for a reason, man. I was willing to give my life for this country, man. Look at this community now, man.”

“You’re the same people I went to war with,” he shouted, in a clip first flagged by RealClearPolitics.

When the man began walking away, a CNN reporter caught up with him and asked him to explain where his anger comes from. “They tell me we are apart of this country, man. How can we be?” he explained, asking her to look around at the police lined up.

As for the charges against the officers, the man was not satisfied: “We got to stop being pacified every time they throw us a bone where they want us to calm down, man. We need to wait for the end result to come in,” he said.

“I was willing to give my life for this country,” he continued. “When I was in the Marine Corps, they called me a ‘patriot.’ A marine. But now that I’m fighting for my people they call me a fucking ‘thug.’ They called me a ‘thug’ when I fight for my people,” he said. When the reporter recoiled at his cursing, he said he would not “sweeten up” anything.

... And then there is the case that most troubles Cherry and leaders of the Texas NAACP, involving a 14-year-old black freshman, Shaquanda Cotton, who shoved a hall monitor at Paris High School in a dispute over entering the building before the school day had officially begun.

The youth had no prior arrest record, and the hall monitor--a 58-year-old teacher's aide--was not seriously injured. But Shaquanda was tried in March 2006 in the town's juvenile court, convicted of "assault on a public servant" and sentenced by Lamar County Judge Chuck Superville to prison for up to 7 years, until she turns 21.

Just three months earlier, Superville sentenced a 14-year-old white girl, convicted of arson for burning down her family's house, to probation.

"All Shaquanda did was grab somebody and she will be in jail for 5 or 6 years?" said Gary Bledsoe, an Austin attorney who is president of the state NAACP branch. "It's like they are sending a signal to black folks in Paris that you stay in your place in this community, in the shadows, intimidated."

Thank you for posting this, Gryphen. This is the "white privilege" that so many people say doesn't exist. I hope it gets spread far and wide.

This is what I said when I posted it on Facebook:

This is the more subtle kind of racism that many white people don't recognize as "white privilege." It's real, though, and pervasive. We need to recognize it in order to stop it.

I had a college professor who happened to be african american, the man is an absolute genius, and he used to tell us of all the times he was stopped for "driving while black", and he said his only option was to sit perfectly still and say nothing. He was stopped because he drove a new jaguar and lived in an affluent area. What bothered me most was he worked twice as hard at everything to reach that level. I saw copies of his tickets, and they were in numerical order, written five minutes apart. I don't recall the total, but there were more than twenty. To make a long story short, the traffic court judge was african american, and the cop got hit with a fine for "selective enforcement" along with twenty reprimands in his permanent record. Yes, racism is alive and well in America, but every once in awhile, justice prevails, just not often enough,
