In wake of National Guard scandal Anchorage school district bans military recruiters indefinitely.

Courtesy of Alaska Dispatch:

On the heels of scathing allegations of sexual and other misconduct against officers in the Alaska Army National Guard, the Anchorage School District has halted all military recruiting at its schools indefinitely, according to Heidi Embley, district spokeswoman.

Ed Graff, district superintendent, started alerting all branches of the military Monday that they could no longer recruit on school property until they met individually with Graff to "discuss student safety and other issues," Embley said.

Embley said Graff's action came in the wake of media reports on leaked investigative files that describe sexual misconduct in the Alaska Army National Guard, some accounts involving high school students.

According to the files, a former student at Dimond High School in Anchorage said that an officer repeatedly asked her out on dates. The woman said that the officer told her she was pretty and that her eyes “stunned” him. When he tried to take her to his home, she jumped out of the car and used a stranger’s phone to call her father for help.

Two other former Dimond High students said the same officer invited them to parties where there would be alcohol. They were underage. A sergeant said the officer bragged about having sex with several people, including a high school student, according to the files prepared between 2010 and 2014.

The Alaska National Guard expressed disappointment in the school district and claims to have replaced all the bad apples, but it is really hard to blame the school district for demonstrating caution.

Besides I actually think that it would be a great thing is recruiters were simply kept out of high school from now on. It was one of the worst features of the No Child Left Behind Act and I think it is time for it to come to an end.

I think this was the appropriate thing to do by the Anchorage School District. If I had a daughter in school these days, it would make me feel much more comfortable as to her safety.

Adult men should not have easy access to female teenagers anywhere!

Stopping high school recruiting? This is rich! The best possible first outcome. Now the Pentagon will be all over this one: 'can't have no shutting' down of the supply lines to our "cough, cough, all voluntary military", now can we?' Will the Pentagon be questioning Parnell next to see why he didn't cull out the bad seeds? Remember: all the recent cases where men had 'gotten away with it' for years, and then, all of a sudden, they were carefully investigated and lost their positions, rank, and retirement benefits. I doubt that this story is going away any time soon. And with the one guy already changing his name (perhaps a fraudulent act in itself, if done with the attempt to elude litigation for his wrongdoing), it could get interesting quite fast. This story is already in The Huffington Post and Business Insider, as well as Daily Mail. I hope it costs Parnell and Sullivan the election.

  3. As far as I'm concerned, all public high schools should ban recruiters from their schools. I'm glad to see Anchorage has taken that step, hopefully others will follow.

Good deal. Teenagers don't need any perverts hanging out offering alcohol in an effort to gain sexual favors. If someone wants to join the military, they can go to a recruiting station.

Sarah is one smart cookie. Good for her to distance from Sean Parnell before it really gets juicy.

Sarah Palin (and Todd) were part of the Alaska National Guard cover up. Look at the years she (and Todd) were quitter governors. Palin and Parnell were in it together!

High school recruiting was part of the awful NCLB act? What a crock! Good for the Superintendent. Like the others, I think there should be NO recruiting allowed in high school.

    1. The name "Sarah Palin" does not appear on the T shirt. Plus, knowing Sarah Palin it's probable she hasn't taken all the steps to register or maintain a trademark.

For me, anything that pisses off Sarah Palin is good. This falls into that category. I see it as political theatre as much as anything.

There cannot be too much mocking of the Palins.

High School recruitment sucks. I am so glad it was blocked where I am.

I recall reading an Alaska recruiter that was pro-Palin back in the day. It was sick then, it is sick now. Good to purge them from schools.

Sean Parnell was right there for Sarah and her family when she needed him.

Yes, keep the NG out of the schools. If the students want to join up, they can find their storefronts anywhere or on the internet.
